Being an association member helped get answers
Per the company nomination: When the Connecticut governor
responded to Covid-19 by closing schools and all non-essential businesses, United Wire Co. knew this was serious. President Bob Swanson, a board member of New England Spring & Metal Stamping association, was among the NESMA members active in weekly conference calls with other state business associations to get up-to-date information and recommendations. He also communicated with other business owners. Those ideas led to actions. Those included daily meetings, sanitizing equipment, staggering lunch shifts, requiring staff to wear face masks and gloves, reducing the number of employees allowed in the break
area and keeping as many doors open as possible, to name a few.
Bob also scrounged to make sure the company could stock PPE.
“As owner, I understand the business end of producing wire: this challenge was unlike any I ever had before. I was responsible for not just keeping our employees safe, but making them feel safe. Beyond that,
I had to let our customers, especially those classified as essential businesses, know that they could depend on us to continue supplying them. I am thrilled to report that no employee to date has tested positive, and that we continue to run 24 hours a day/five days a week.” Bob Swanson.
