CARBON STEELS

United Wire offers a wide range of carbon steel grades. From low carbon 1006 and depending upon availability up to 1095, many different sizes and shapes can be rolled from the various carbon products.

Carbon steel can roughly be broken down into three classes based on carbon content. We offer but are not limited to the following:
Low-carbon steel
0.05 to 0.309% carbon content
Low-carbon steel is the most common form of steel because its price is relatively low while it provides material properties that are acceptable for many applications. Low carbon steel is often referred to as cold-rolled. We offer all tempers, from No. 5 Dead soft to No. 1 Full hard.

Medium-carbon steel
Approximately 0.3–0.8% carbon content Balances ductility and strength and has good wear resistance; used for large parts, forging and automotive components. The most common medium carbon would be a Hard Drawn or HDMB.

High-carbon steel
Approximately 0.8–2.0% carbon content Very strong, used for various springs and high-strength wire products. There are a few different grades of high-carbon steels available; Music Wire, Chrome Silicon, Chrome Vanadium, & Oil tempered.

United Wire can also can offer these grades of steel with a galvanized coating.
